At present there are numerous companies here in Europe producing Hydrogen with the classic electrolysis process in an attempt to meet the demand for use in fuel cells and even motor vehicles that are directly powered by hydrogen-burning motors. Electrolysis, however, is very inefficient due to the huge amount of electricity needed to separate the water molecule into the H₂ and O₂ gases. Producing sufficient amounts of “green” electricity is the problem, -Germany alone would have to produce 5 X more wind energy and 9 X more solar energy to meet its goal of climate neutrality by 2045. Since this is not realistic, Germany has made agreements with Morocco to purchase solar electricity produced in the Sahara desert.
As we see it, electro mobility, and the fuel cells or batteries needed to power it may slowly gain acceptance and make a meaningful contribution in Europe, North America and in some parts of Asia over the next 3 decades and beyond. The rest of the world, however, will be dependent on hydrocarbons (primarily gasoline and diesel) well into the second half of the 21st century.
